It’s more straightforward than the storytelling of Dark Souls, but it also retains that signature style of personal discovery. You’ve entered a strange diseased city, the infected inhabitants want to kill you, and you’re tasked with eliminating the plague and figuring out what exactly caused it in the first place. Right from the start, Bloodborne has a wildly captivating story. You play as a Hunter, a specially trained warrior sent in to cleanse Yharnam and uncover the origin of the plague. Unfortunately, the priests met their match in a deadly virus that struck the city and transformed the inhabitants into beastly shadows of their former selves. Few games have made me feel such an emotionally palpable sense of pride and earned victory like Bloodborne. I quietly save and turn off the game, roll into bed, and immediately begin to go over that boss encounter in my head and revel in that sense of accomplishment. Not because I’m embarrassed by my emotion, but because I’m on the tail-end of a five-hour Bloodborne binge and it’s now 3 A.M.
